Microdermabrasion Definition

So what exactly is microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion is a light cosmetic procedure that exfoliates skin through the use of a mechanical medium to gently remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells from the epidermis. Typically, microdermabrasion uses two parts: an exfoliating material such as crystals or diamond flakes and some sort of suction to lift the skin during exfoliation. The procedure is non-invasive and is usually performed by a trained skin care professional.

Microdermabrasion Benefits

What benefits are associated with microdermabrasion? One of the most important benefits of microdermabrasion is its anti-ageing effect. Treated areas show drastic improvements in tone, texture, and colour of skin. Microdermabrasion also softens lines and wrinkles, smoothes coarse skin, decreases acne and acne scars, eliminates blackheads and whiteheads, minimizes enlarged and open pores, reduces the appearance of dull, stressed, or congested skin, improves sun damaged skin, reduces age spots, and allows for increased product penetration.

There are two different kinds of exfoliate, but which one is safer and which one is more effective? Traditionally microdermabrasion treatment used crystals to wear away the dead skin. However, slowly the crystals are being replaced with a more reliable abrasive, diamonds. Crystal microdermabrasion is defined as an ablative procedure. An ablative procedure works by wearing away the outer or forward surface of an object by use of heat, force, or friction. Crystal microdermabrasion can be compared to “sand blasting”. Diamond microdermabrasion is an abrasive procedure defined as the removal of the outer or forward surface of an object by use scratching, grating, or sanding. Diamond microdermabrasion can best be compared to “sand paper”. The diamond microdermabrasion system replaces the crystal one with a reusable device. Not only does the diamond system provide a more cost effective route, but it is considered safe as well. Areas closer to the eyes and mouth can be abraded accurately and without the fear of getting stray crystals in the eyes or being ingested.

How long will the treatment take and how often should I get treatment? Typically, a treatment will take approximately 30 minutes. Frequency of treatment is decided depending on your skin condition and your goals. You may need anywhere between 3-5 treatments a year up to 4-6 treatments for those who are acne-prone. Maintenance treatments every couple of months are recommended.

When will I start to see results and will the treatment hurt? Your skin will look immediately better following a treatment. If you have oily skin and are acne prone, continued treatments will help to unclog the pores. Most patients experience no pain whatsoever but rather a mild pulling sensation.
